Simmons' Virginia State 2013 Outlook

IslandStats.com
Zaire Simmons’ coach looks at the Virginia State University Women’s Tennis 2013 Women Tennis Outlook.

“The goals for the season like any other season for the Virginia State University are to win the division, conference, regionals, and ultimately the CIAA conference championship,” said coach Dr. Linda Person who has called this team the “most talented” she has had since 2008, the year women's tennis won the CIAA Championship.

Nonetheless, Coach Person may be right with calling this team the “most talented”, which comprises of four returning players to coincide with two solid newcomers. The four returning players are sophomores Nakesha Harry, Sharmane Tonkins, Simmons, and junior Amanda Spencer. The two new additions to the team are freshmen Brittany Uzzell and Kayla Kale.

Coach Looks to an Upperclassman

The time has come for Spencer to not only step her game up to another level but her teammates as well, as Coach Person looks to her to be the leader of the squad this season. Spencer finished last season with an 8-4 conference record playing as No. 1 in singles competition. That same intensity and aggressive style of play that she exemplifies is expected to be on display once again, resulting in her being one of the top players in the CIAA.

The Superb Sophomores

Coming into the Virginia State University program last season as highly touted freshman much was expected from Harry, Tonkins, and Simmons. Needless to say, they had a stellar freshman year last season with having a combine conference record of 37-8 in singles. As sophomores, Coach Person looks for these ladies to demonstrate their growth and leadership on the court.

The Newcomers

This year Coach Person has brought in two eager freshmen, who are ready to spring into action for the season. Uzzell, from Prince George, VA is a lefty with a strong served. While Kale, is a solid player who counts as a walk-on from Newport News, VA. Kale has played in various USTA Tournaments prior to joining the team.

What to Look Out for

Virginia State University possess a strong team and looks forward in staying in the top tier of the CIAA once again. However, many of the teams in the CIAA are looking to seek revenge on the Virginia State University, especially Chowan University. It is said that Chowan has reloaded with some international players on their roster. This maybe the Virginia State University biggest test in the CIAA, this is something to look out for during the season.
