Countdown to Mountain Bike Series 2012

IslandStats.com
The 2013 Bicycle Works Mountain Bike Race series, presented by Fat Tire Massive, begins January 6th, 2013.

Building on last year's epic race season, this year promises to be even better with the addition of 3 new tracks, a new race format, and more riders looking for a position on the podium.

All of Bermuda's best tracks will be used in the upcoming race season: Arboretum, Fort Scaur, Admiralty House Park, Ferry Reach Park, Hog Bay Park, Lodge Point Park and a special visit to The Bermuda National Museum/Casemates.

Included in this exceptional line-up of tracks is a return to racing at Coney Island for a 4x eliminator specialty event which promises to provide some exciting racing for both participants and spectators alike.

The 2013 Bicycle Works Mountain Bike Race Series will consist of 8 events with the top 6 results contributing to the participant's overall score. Riders will be broken down into classes based on their ability: 'A' Class, 'B' Class, Novice and Juniors for both male and female riders. Last year saw Dominique Mayo dominate the men's 'A' Class, with Mark Hatherly and Dexter Swan rounding out the top three.

This year Mayo can expect some fierce competition from 2012 'Most Improved Rider' Deshi Smith along with the return of former 'A' Class champion Neil de St. Croix. In the Women's Class, Karen Smith, Sarah Jordan, Gabriella Arnold and Sarah Bonnet will all be vying for the top honors. Amongst the junior's, Daniel Hetzel, Matthew Olivera and Robin Horsfield will look to take honors in the Junior men's class.

The race season opener on January 6th is the 3rd Annual Bicycle Works Dockyard to Ferry Reach Mountain Bike Race. This year, the Fat Tire Massive and Bicycle Works have partnered with the Family Centre Cycle for Change program to help raise awareness and funds for a very worthy charity. This is the second event that the Fat Tire Massive has participated in to help raise funds for the Family Centre. Martha Dismont, Executive Director of Family Centre stated, "We held our first family cycling event, Cycle for Change on Saturday, November 17th.

This event provided families the opportunity to cycle along the Bermuda Railway Trail, spend quality time, and take part in a meaningful event. We were very pleased to meet the very enthusiastic Fat Tire Massive Mountain Biking Group, and equally as excited about their passion to help raise funds for our families during this time of the year. It is very heartwarming to learn they decided to support us with the Bicycle Works Dockyard to Ferry Reach Mountain Bike Race as another Cycle for Change event on January 6th."

The event will see participants race the 22 mile course from Dockyard to Ferry Reach Park using the entire length of Bermuda's railway trail and parks system.
