The Bermuda Track and Field Association have now changed their name to the Bermuda National Athletics Association.
Bermuda National Athletics Association President Donna Watson said, “As you are aware we have been in discussion for the last several months regarding the name change of the "BTFA" Bermuda Track & Field Association, there are several reasons we have decided to do this.”
Watson continued, “At the last IAAF Congress it was suggested that as each National Association encompasses not only Track & Field but also Road running(1/2 marathons, marathons, 10K, 5k etc), Race Walking that the association's name should say "Athletics" instead of "Track & Field".”
“It was also advised that the word "Amateur" be removed. Most of the associations have gone through the process of the name change and there are only a few which included us that still had "Track & Field" in their name. Therefore we discussed this at the Board level and decided it was time for us to be inclusive and do it before it was made mandatory (be proactive instead of reactive). Of course we wanted to get through Carifta and the remainder of our season first,” Watson went on to say.
Watson concluded, “We have done our due diligence and had the name approved by the Registrar of Companies. We then held an SGM last evening and presented the name to our affiliates and it has been accepted that the new name for the Bermuda Track & Field Association is now "BNAA" Bermuda National Athletics Association.”
