The 2012 Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club's ('BMRC') National Championship Series continues under mixed weather conditions in Bermuda over the past two race events. After a positive start in the season opener on May 6th Team Tuned's riders continued their training to maintain an edge on the competition heading into rounds 2 and 3.
GP125 Classification
In Round 2 Bruce Degrilla Jr and coach Cyril Whitter III lined up in the GP125 classification side by side in what was destined to be an epic clash between the team mates and Keanu Wilson. Race 1 and 2 unfolded in an identical manner seeing the three riders battle head to head for the opening laps of the race. By mid distance both Degrilla and Wilson pulled a gap on Whitter leaving the battle for the win to a two-man battle. Degrilla battled hard in both race 1 and 2 but relinquished the victory twice having to settle for 2nd place. The third and final heat of the day brought a change of fortunes for Degrilla. As the green flag dropped all three riders battled into turn one. The race for the lead once again became a two-man battle; this time between Degrilla and Whitter. Try as he may, Cyril was unable to mount a significant challenge as Degrilla took the checkered flag in first place and maintained his lead in the overall GP125 standings. Round 3 was overshadowed by mixed weather conditions. Degrilla was sidelined due to injury leaving Whitter to carry the team flag in the class against championship competitor Wilson. Race one was held in full rain conditions and saw Whitter and Wilson race head to head lap after lap for the 10 lap sprint. Wilson managed to maintain a comfortable margin for the first victory of the day. In race 2 the conditions started to change as parts of the track dried. Whitter opted to continue to race on his rain tires due to the damp patches on the track in the high speed sections which proved crucial as the race unfolded. Once the green flag dropped Whitter drafted in behind Wilson close on his rear wheel for the opening laps of the race. Under pressure Wilson lost grip on his front tire sliding out of the race handing the lead and the victory to Whitter in race 2. Whitter went on to win the third round of the day taking over the championship lead in the GP125 classification.
Supermoto Classification
Kewuan Gilbert was unable to compete in the 2nd round of the BMRC National Championship Series due to a mechanical fault.
In round 3 Gilbert opted to sit out Race 1 and 2 as the conditions proved hazardous to run without wet racing tires mounted to his Honda CRF450 Supermoto machine. As conditions improved and the try dried Gilbert lined up to race in the third and final heat of the day. When the green flag dropped Gilbert got off the line and took the hole shot into turn one. The supermoto class was run alongside the GP125 class which enabled Gilbert to take part in a head to head battle with his coach Whitter for the 10 lap sprint. Lap after lap Whitter and Gilbert pulled away from the rest of the field as the battled for the lead (although competing in separate classifications). Gilbert won the final heat of the day in the Supermoto class by a comfortable margin and maintains his form heading into the fourth round of the series.
