Douglas Out in the Cold IslandStats.com With everyone waiting for the final selections of the teams www.islandstats.com can reveal the umpires set for duty during the Cup Match Classic. For the third year in a row Roger Dill and Richard Austin will stand in the middle, with Anthony Fubler the third umpire and Lester Harnett will be the Match Manager.
This will be the third year that ICC Americas Region Elite Panel umpire Steven Douglas will not take part. Douglas who was selected to the Elite Panel back in 2007 has not stood in the middle for the past three years due to the fact that his son Chris Douglas opens the batting for the challengers Somerset Cricket Club.
Some may say is the right decision not to have Douglas stand in the middle, however others would argue the fact that if Cup Match has the best that the two clubs could offer, why would someone on the ICC Elite Panel lose out.
Decision such as this would only stop others from becoming officials because the first thing people would say is that the umpire is favoring his family member. Is this what we have resorted too, the game is played on the field between the players, Umpires are used as an excuse for a player making a bad decisions and getting themselves out.
Some spectators and Bermuda journalist like criticize officials for making a decision that they would never make because they would not make themselves available to do the job. Some sitting at square leg would argue with a LBW decision thinking they know best, others would even write that the officials have had a bad game when they would not comment on the amount of times that a player drives and misses a delivery out side the off stick.
As often is the case, you will know doubt see other media trying the comment or write stories even getting people to comment on it, however you look at it the fact remains that Douglas will again lose out.
