Storm Rally Back to Defeat Hamilton Parish Hurricanes
Looking to make it back to the Bermuda Basketball Association Women’s league finals for a second year in a row, the Defending Champions St. George’s Storm found themselves down early in the semi-final match up against Hamilton Parish Hurricanes. Led by guard Jahkenya Trott, who scored 8 points for Hamilton Parish took an early 13-5 lead after a series of turnovers in the back court. With a clear advantage in the post, St. George’s took advantage of their second chance opportunities scoring back to back lay-ups after a series of missed shots to pull within three. Two jump shots by Jamila Godwin would extend the Hurricanes lead to 7 with minutes remaining in the half, but an 8 – 4 run by St. George’s saw Hamilton Parish hold a 23-19 halftime lead.
Both teams struggled early in the second half to find their shot, shooting a combined 2-12 from the field. St. George’s would eventually find their shooting touch as their leading scorer, Kimale Evans, hit back to back lay-ups scoring 4 of her 13 points to pull her team within two. Hamilton Parish raised their defensive intensity with 10 minutes remaining creating a series of steals that led to two break-a-way lay-ups by their top scorer Jahturi Trott who scored 11 points. With three minutes Hamilton Parish held a 32-25 lead, however a three pointer and lay-up by St. George’s guard Mallory with two minutes remaining tied the game at 32-32. Despite having a series of opportunities at the basket to score, Hamilton Parish was unable to score in the closing minutes and saw the lead they held for 34 minutes evaporate as St. George’s rallied back in the closing minutes to defeat the Hurricanes in a final score of 38-33.
Undefeated Warwick Suns Hold off Somerset in the Final Seconds
As the Warwick Suns fought to continue their undefeated streak this season and return to the BBA’s Women’s league finals, the Somerset Hornets were determined to challenge the Suns every step of the way. Looking to become the first team in the Bermuda Basketball Women’s Summer League to go undefeated and win a league championship, the Suns came out the gates running taking an early 4-0 lead over the Hornets. With the recent addition of 16 year old Atlanta High School for Girls basketball player Nia Robertson, the Hornets were able to push the tempo and tie the game in the early minutes, however in the closing minutes of the half, the Suns went on a 4-0 run to give them a 12-8 halftime lead.
In the second half, Robertson who finished with 8 points hit back to back jump shots to tie the game in the early minutes. The Hornets took their first lead of the game with a base-line shoot from the corner from Robertson. As the Warwick players implored one another to pick up the defensive, Suns leading scorer guard Arkeita Fubler who scored 11 points, scored two transition lay-ups to give her team a two point lead. After trailing by 2 with three minutes remaining, Suns forward Stacia Ming hit an acrobatic lay-up to tie the game at 19-19. A three pointer and jump shot by Fubler followed and gave the Suns a five point lead as they advanced to the league finals with a final score of 25-19.
