Ceci & Ellie Wollmann

The US Optimist Dinghy Association Layline Girls National Championship was held in Deltaville Virginia, more than eighty of the best girl sailors from around the country and overseas sailed 3 races to determine the Girl’s National Champion.

Alie Toppa was the first sailor around the 1.5 mile trapezoid course, she was followed by Ellie Wollmann and Haddon Hughs. The light wind caused the sailors to spread out substantially on the course. Fourteen sailors were unable to finish before the time limit expired.

The wind built a bit for the second race enabling all of the sailors to finish within the time limit. Haddon Hughs was the first finisher. Martina Sly finished second and Eliot Caple finished 3rd.

The start of the 3rd race was by far the best start of the day. There were no boats over early and the racers formed a nice line all the way down the start. Haddon Hughs took her 2nd first of the day. Anna Weis was 2nd and Alexandra DelBello was 3rd.

In the evening the sailors were joined by Anna Tunnicliffe who spoke at the opening ceremony for the Fleet National Championship and was to give out Girls Championship awards. The sailors enjoyed talking to Anna, seeing her gold medal and posing for photos.

Ceci Wollmann was 11th overall and 3rd in Blue Fleet, while her older sister Ellie was 17th overall.
