Laurion Burchall recently took part in the 3rd Washington's Strongest Apple competition finishing 7th, the event is an amateur competition put on by Grant Higa, a local professional strongman.
Competitors compete in two weight classes, lightweight and heavyweight. Burchall competed in the lightweight class, which has a cut-off of weight of 231lbs, with the heavyweights going a lot larger.
Burchall competed in 5 events in the competition, that included - Yoke Walk - This event sees athletes Try to walk 100 feet with a 665lbs weight on your back, competitors get 60 seconds and furthest distance or fastest time wins. - Tire Flip - Athletes Flip a 650lb tire for the same 100 feet with a 60 second time limit. - Axle Clean and Press – Includes lifting a 209lb weight from the ground to your shoulders and then press/jerk it for as many reps as possible in 60 seconds. Burchall commented “The bar is a lot thicker than a standard gym barbell which makes it hard to hold on to.” - Farmers Walk – Athletes Pick up a 225lb weight in each hand and carry them for 200 feet as quickly as possible and the - Keg Load – Athletes Put 4 kegs on a 50 inch platform, the keg weights were 180lbs, 200lbs, 220lbs and 250lbs.
Burchall said, “This was my first competition and it was a lot of fun. Training with Grant Higa and his crew for the last 6 months has made a huge difference.
