Four young men from Bermuda Wayne Broadley-Samuels, Chioke McGhie-Raynor, Isaiah Robinson and Jah-Kaya Stewart are taking part in the Soccer and Friends Camp in Maryland.
The Soccer and Friends Camp is run by brother Eugene and Canard Pascoe and a few other Bermudians living in the Maryland Area, Eugene told www.islandstats.com that, “The programme is twofold, we are looking at players who can perform both on and off the Soccer Pitch, we want to be able to identify kids at a young age if they are having difficulties inside the class room to get them some help so that they can go on to college”.
“We have been running this kind of program for some 12 years and it has been a success thus far, we have had several players go off to college so we decided to bring the program to Bermuda”, Pascoe went on to say. “We have started with these four and we are going to be looking to do more each year, these four will spend the next four weeks in the Maryland area attending Soccer camps at Howard University, St. John’s High School Camp and the Soccer and Friends Camp”.
“The most important thing is that the boys will be training during the day and doing lessons in the evening,” continued Pascoe. “We are having the boys evaluated to see where they are at so that we can give them the necessary lessons that they would need to get up to par with others their age and hopefully put them on the right track”.
The Boys spent Day One under the watchful eye of Howard University Men’s Soccer coach Michael Lawrence.
Lawrence was promoted to head coach of the Howard University men's soccer program on July 16, 2008. Lawrence was the top assistant at Howard during the 2004-2008 seasons. Lawrence told www.islandstats.com, "I intend to help develop a culture for the soccer program that embraces excellence in the classroom and on the field."
Lawrence has gained a wealth of experience working with various colleges and high schools. Prior to HU, he spent three years as the assistant coach at Shepherd College. From 1998-99, he was the assistant women's coach at Trinity College. He also had stints at Wakefield High School (Arlington, Va.), T.C. Williams High School (Alexandria, Va.) and Bishop Carroll High School (Washington, D.C.) While at Wakefield, Lawrence helped the Warriors to its first National District appearance and its first appearance in the Northern Virginia Regional Playoffs.
