Stevens-Carty Athlete of the Year

IslandStats.com
Henry Stevens-Carty was awarded the 2010 Track Athlete of The Year for the 800 meters selected by the Track Clubs from all over the Metro Atlanta.

Allatoona's Stevens-Carty couldn't have asked for a better end to his high school track and field career, writes Greg Oshust from MDJ Online.

The senior did what he set out to do by winning the state championship in both the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run in Class AAAA, as well as, winning the Region 7AAAA and county titles in both of those events.

For his achievements on the state, region and county levels, Stevens-Carty is the Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County boys track and field athlete of the year.

It was a memorable season for Stevens-Carty, who claimed the first state titles for Allatoona in the school's two-year history. He went undefeated in the 800 and was nearly unbeaten in the 1,600, except for a second-place finish at the Georgia Tech Coaches Invitational.

"I feel like I had a strong track season," Stevens-Carty said. "I wanted to win state titles in the 800 and 1,600 and I did. The whole year, I ran strong and I set some records and I set a new county record in the 800. The season went exactly the way I wanted it to."

Stevens-Carty was returning to high school competition after sitting out a year following his transfer from Kennesaw Mountain, where he won the Region 5AAAAA championship in the 1,600 and the county title in the 800 in 2008.

He did compete in a number of international meets last summer, including the World Youth Games in Brixen, Italy and the Pan American Juniors in Trinidad and Tobago.

The time off from high school competition was beneficial for Stevens-Carty, who used that time to work on getting stronger in the weight room.

"It gave me a chance to work out in the weight room more and get stronger," Stevens-Carty said. "I put in more (training) mileage and worked on getting stronger and it made a big difference."

Stevens-Carty came through at the state meet, where he won the 800 with a time of 1:53.25 and the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.45 in AAAA.

At the Region 7AAAA meet, Stevens-Carty swept his two events, winning the 800 with a time of 1:53.33 and the 1,600 with a time of 4:27.56.

He also pulled off the double at the county meet as he won the 800 with a personal-best time of 1:52.44 and also took the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.49.

Stevens-Carty will continue his track career on the college level at Samford, an NCAA Division I school located in Birmingham, Ala.

"I looked at other schools, but Samford stood out among the rest," Stevens-Carty said. "It is a perfect fit and I really wanted to go there."
