Gerry Swan, former National Athletics Coach and who now coaches privately, has travelled to Miramar, Florida for the IV North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships, scheduled for July 9-11. Swan was appointed in February of this year by the NACAC Area Association to be the Technical Delegate at its biennial championships. Swan, in the capacity of Technical Delegate, represents the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the NACAC Area Association and will work with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to ensure proper conduct of the international competition.

Swan is the only Bermudian and the only person in Bermuda who is a qualified IAAF Area Technical Official (ATO) which positions him to be selected as a Technical Delegate for, or assigned to work as an international official at, international competitions. His qualifications, experience and proficiency are among the reasons he has been chosen as the Technical Delegate for the NACAC U-23 Championships.

He was the Competition Director of the highly successful 2004 CARIFTA Games which were held at the Bermuda National Sports Center. In addition to designing the competition and medal ceremony schedules, all 250 plus competition officials for the 2004 CARIFTA Games were trained by Swan. The outcome was that the 2004 CARIFTA Games are still widely regarded as ‘the best ever CARIFTA Games’ to date. It was during those Games that the tremendously supportive and appreciative crowds at the Bermuda stadium witnessed the stellar performances of Jamaican Usain Bolt who ran the World Junior Men’s 200m Record (of 19.93 seconds on April 11, 2004), becoming the first, and still only, junior athlete to run sub-20 seconds at the half lap race.

Prior to the 2004 CARIFTA Games, Swan was also the Technical Delegate of the CAC Cross Country Championships which were held at Port Royal Golf Course – hailed by the CACAC President as the ‘best ever organized’ (CAC) championships. Subsequent to the 2004 CARIFTA Games, Swan also gained experience at senior international track and field competition, working as the Technical Delegate at the CAC Senior Track and Field Championships in Nassau, Bahamas and appointed as Technical Delegate of a subsequent CAC Cross Country Championships that were scheduled for Jamaica. (In more recent times, the former CAC Cross Country Championships has come under the organizational umbrella of the NACAC Area Association). In April of this year, Swan worked as an ATO at the CARIFTA Games – supervising the ten (10) horizontal jumps competitions - in Cayman Islands- at the invitation of the Cayman Islands Athletics Association.

The 2010 three-day NACAC Under-23 Track and Field Championships will be held at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida. Competition will start Friday morning, July 9. Athletes from 32 countries are expected to compete.

Additional to his IAAF ATO qualification, Swan is the only Bermudian who has an IAAF Level 5 or IAAF Chief Coach Certification - commonly referred to as Technical Director in other sports.
