After helping APOEL win the Cyprus National Basketball League Title, Sullivan Phillips picked up the Eurobasket.com All-Cyprus League Defensive Player of the Year Award as well as the getting an Honorable Mention in the All Division Team.

Phillips who was home to celebrate his mother’s Birthday sat down with www.islandstats.com to talk about his future and the state of the Bermuda Basketball National Program.

“I had a good season, however I am not going back to APOEL, I am out on the market again it seems like a every year occurrence”, said Phillips. “I am looking to go to another European Market, I already have a few offers from a couple of good teams, but you never want to sign to early and you never want to sign to later, I am hoping to sign something by mid July”.

Phillips continued, “Looking back on the season, going into the season I want to just help the team progress, I have played in Europe for a few years so I knew what to expect, we played a lot of games on the road, however I believe in order to be a champion you have to win on the road, we only played a total of 6 games at home and that included the European championships, after the first couple of game you get used to it”.

“At the conclusion of the season you turn off only for a little while, work never stops, I am 31 and there are players that are 21 trying to take your job, so I took a week off to relax after the Championship, but now I am back at work in the gym and on the court trying to improve my game”, continued Phillips.

“The National program is all to pieces at this time, I don’t see prosperity in the program. I am a bit concerned that we are not planning to defend our title at the Island Games that we won 83 – 75 over Menorca and we are planning to host the competition in 2013”, Phillips went on to say. “I am totally disgusted with this, I agree that we should be involved in the Caribbean Basketball Championships (CBC), but we should also be looking to have something that the youngsters can strive towards, it would make a lot of sense for a team to go to the CBC and a team go to the Island Games, this would really allow us to see where we match up in our region”.

“The competition that we play against in the Island Games is pretty good, many people think that the teams are not that good, but when they come to Bermuda the public would get a chance to see these teams in action for themselves. It is my hope that the Bermuda Basketball Association gets it together very quickly as it is already pass the 12th hour to put teams together when you know your competition has been working together for about two years”, concluded Phillips.
