The Great Britain Basketball website Gameongb.com has spoken to Jenaya Wade-Fray’s Great Britain Standard Life Women's Head Coach Tom Maher about how the training camp in Stirling is progressing.
With the camp now two weeks old, and a only a week till the women take part in their first competitive action of the summer when they travel to Bulgaria for three test games, it seemed like an appropriate time to get an update from within the camp.
As well as the usual mix of experience, a number of younger more inexperienced players have been added to the squad, and Maher is really pleased with how everyone has combined.
"I am really happy, there has been a step up from last year and the intensity has been good since the start of camp."
Asked if anyone performances on the practice court had stood out Maher responded.
"Rather than saying standout performances, we have seen great improvement in a couple of players. Rose Anderson and Julie Page in particular, who this time last year we didn't think would make the squad, are doing well."
Maher who took China to a fourth place finish at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and also guided Australia to bronze and silver in 1996 and 2000 respectively, will make his long awaited senior women coaching debut as his team embark on European Championship qualifiers. Ahead of the campaign he is confident on how the team will perform.
"I'm confident that we will perform respectively, although not sure I can say what point's margin either way. We will be competitive as long as no one gets hurt."
When asked what his strategy for success will be during the forthcoming campaign he added.
"Basketball, like any other aspect of success in life is about good preparation, good planning, hard work and team spirit - these are things that make a team successful."
