Aaron Evans Set for Outdoor Championships
Evans is one of Ten Georgia track and field team members that have made the journey to the spot commonly known as “Track Town, USA” for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., running from Wednesday, June 9 to Saturday, June 12.
Seniors Israel Machovec (shot put) and Branislav Danis (hammer) will be joining junior Cory Holman (decathlon) and sophomores Evans (800-meter run) and Brian Moore (javelin) as representatives for the Georgia men.
On the women’s side, seniors Bridget Lyons (10,000) and Kat Majester (pole vault) are teaming with sophomore Nikola Lomnicka (hammer) and freshmen Maria Augutis (triple jump) and Lucie Ondraschkova (heptathlon) to represent Georgia.
Action begins for Georgia with Ondraschkova competing in the first event of the heptathlon (100 hurdles) at 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday. Evans will compete in the 800 semifinals at 7:30 p.m. that same day to mark the start for the Bulldog men.
Evans, who is leading the nation in the 800 (1:46.26) coming into the meet, will be battling a world-class field, including three Oregon runners competing on their home track. After earning runner-up honors at the SEC Championships, Evans shattered his own school and Bermuda national record in the 800 by winning the NCAA East Preliminary Round with his 1:46.26.
Arantxa King
King was one of the Stanford athletes that was included with the announcement of the Pac-10 All-Academic teams for track and field. 20 men and 16 women were honored by Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott for their work both in the classroom and on the track.
The Stanford men had four athletes named to the first team led by Miles Unterreiner who carries a 3.96 grade point average as an undeclared sophomore. Cody Cox, Chris Derrick and Justin Reed were also named to the first team. Reed was the only repeat first-teamer as Cox was named to the second team last year. Unterreiner and Derrick were not eligible last season as freshmen.
The women's first-teamers were Madeline Duhon and Caitlin Hewitt. Duhon repeats as a first team award winner, while Hewitt was named to the second team each of the last two seasons. Duhon carries 3.88 gpa in economics, while Hewitt is at 3.72 in civil engineering.
Stanford had three men and six women on the second team and four of the second team honorees competing at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships. Elliott Heat will represent the men, while Jaynie Goodbody, King and Stephanie Marcy will represent the women.
