Dinghy Cancelled & Cooper Update

IslandStats.com
The start of the 2010 Fitted Dinghy Season has been cancelled due to the weather. The Heritage Trophy, Anniversary Cup and Leon D. Fox Cup races were expected to be sailed in the St. George’s Harbor, however due to the expected high winds race officials decided to cancel the season opener.

Mackenzie Cooper

Cooper
and Tabor Academy held on with a "rollercoaster" day during Day 2 of the 2010 Interscholastic School Sailing Association's (ISSA) Team Racing National Championship in Seattle, Washington to secure the runner's up position behind Point Loma High School from San Diego, California. Freshman Cooper was one of 4 helmsman chosen by Tabor coaches to attend the Nationals and sailed in 16 Races.

First order of business on a chilly 45 degree morning was completing the Qualification Round to establish the final seeding. Tabor was able to win their last match against Severn HS to secure their position as second seeds in the Gold Division of the Championship Round. Seeded first with 11 points (undefeated in the initial round) was Point Loma with 11 points, Tabor was next with 9 points, Newport Harbor HS (defending champs) with 8 points and St. George's School with 7 points. Points from the Qualification round are carried over to the Championship round so every win really counted.

Point Loma started out the Championship Round with their first loss of the regatta against St. George's, showing the other teams that they were not completely unbeatable. Tabor won their match against Newport Harbor and then lost to St. Georges and Point Loma. The standings after 3 races were Point Loma 13, Tabor 10, St Georges 10, Newport Harbor 8. The last 3 races were critical, Point Loma had to win one more race to clinch the championship but Tabor and St George's needed as many wins as possible to secure the runner's up position. 2nd place came down to last 2 races for both Tabor and St. George's. St Georges was on a roll winning 4 straight giving them 11 points. Tabor had lost 3 and won 1, leaving them with 10 points. Tabor would have to race St. George's in the second to last race and Point Loma in the final race. Tabor was able to squeak out 2 very close victories while St. Georges was only able to get one victory, giving Tabor a clear 2nd place overall.

This is the sixth time that Tabor have finished second at Team Racing Nationals (1992, 1999, 1996, 2002, 2008, 2010). Combined with the school’s seven National Championships (1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, & 2007) this is 13 top two finishes in 22 years.
