Good Start for Cooper & Tabor
Mackenzie Cooper helped his Tabor Academy team start off with a bang during Day 1 of the ISSA US National High School Sailing Team Racing Championships which began in light winds.

Twelve of the best High School sailing teams in the US have gathered for the weekend in Seattle, Washington to battle it out for the Baker Trophy at Sail Sand Point. The Tabor sailors went 8-1 for the day, losing only to Point Loma from San Diego, CA who went undefeated at 9-0 for the day.

The organizers ran out of daylight, leaving most teams with 1 or 2 more matches left to complete the qualifying round. The final standings in the qualification round will determine the seeding for the Championship, Silver and Bronze divisions.

At 8-1 it looks as if Tabor will qualify for the Championship Fleet along with Point Loma HS and 2 others yet to be determined. The top 4 will compete in a double round robin to determine the National Champion on Sunday.
Other high ranking teams after 58 races were Newport Harbor HS and Corona Del Mar HS, both from the same area in southern California.

Bermuda’s Olympic hopeful Zander Kirkland had recently been the sailing coach for Newport Harbor, leading them to victory last year at this same event. Kirkland and his brother Jesse are both alumni of Tabor Academy and the sailing team along with Sean Bouchard.

Bouchard finished his second year of studies at Roger Williams University and spent a few days last week helping the Tabor team prepare for this regatta in Marion, Massachusetts.
