Roosevelt Bouie Answers Questions

Terrence Dill
IslandStats.com
While on the island, Roosevelt Bouie Jr. the General Manager of the Buffalo Stampede offered Bermuda Basketball player Terrence Dill a chance to not only make the roster of the Premier Basketball League team in the USA but also have the chance to be seen by European Scouts that have excepted Bouie’s invitation to the try-outs, www.islandstats.com asked Bouie a few questions.

Q. Did Terrence Standout in the clinic?

A.
Yes he did standout. When I watch players I look for things that are not easily taught. You either have them or you do not. It is not hard to teach basketball skills to any player, but it is almost impossible to teach a player to always work hard and take pride in his play at all times on the floor. It would have been very easy to just give up while playing against the SKY team, but he focused on doing what he knew how to do best. When a player understands his weaknesses he can always play within his strengths until he develops.

Q. When you are looking for talent, what are some of the areas that you look in?

A.
Do they listen. If you learn from your mistakes you can be a good player. If you learn from everyone's mistakes you can be a great player. As long as you play the game you have to constantly work to get better. Talented players that do not work hard will get left behind as most coaches will get less talented players that listen and work hard will in a very short time fly past the players with natural ability. Players will get an understanding how to play to their strengths and away from the opponents natural abilities.

Q. Terrence will get a chance to make your team, but will there be other scouts looking?

A.
The greatest thing about the camp that Terrence will be attending in Buffalo, NY is that there will be representatives from seven countries. He is young, athletic and has a British Passport. He is now a very interesting player that can play in any European country as a national. This means his team can get other non European players to fill the limited spots for them on each team. He is talented, coachable and possesses characteristics that make him an interesting project player to keep on a team as he blossoms.

Q. What did you think of the Bermuda talent you saw during the clinic and while watching the game?

A.
The talent I saw was exactly what I saw in Terrence. There is much raw talent, great desire and with the desire to get better. For example: I do a series of basketball camps that are totally geared to teaching elite basketball skills. How to set perfect picks, run an unstoppable pick and roll, get open anytime to receive the ball, scoring consistently in pressure situations, dynamic boxing out, basically how to think like a champion. Everyone runs drill to get better, champions run drills to master them! The learning curve is fast and furious.

Q. Do you have any other plans for Bermuda in the near future?

A.
I would love to run an Elite Basketball Skills Camp in Bermuda. The first phase is 2 hours a day for 3 days. It includes me working one on one and in small groups with each player attending. I make sure that every player understands what I teach them. The most important thing in the development of a dominant player is his Basketball IQ. When they understand the concept they will own the game. Then how far they choose to go will depend on their dedication to the game. It is important that everyone on the floor understands these concepts. From the smallest to the largest, it will cause a dynamic change immediately. I can be ready at a moment’s notice to return to Bermuda. I will give Terrence a taste of this knowledge while he is here, he will get excited. It is 38 years of basketball knowledge available in face to face learning situations.
