Jenaya Wade-Fray IslandStats.com While Chattanooga have remained atop the Southern Conference for most of Head Coach Wes Moore's tenure, it has become a precarious perch. Many of the last several years have come down to the wire for title or seeding. Each time Chattanooga has prevailed.
In their annual banquet, hosted by the Mocs Club, Chattanooga looked back on the 2009-10 basketball season and there was much to talk about.
The first topic was Chattanooga's 11th consecutive Southern Conference regular season title, 16th overall. It also marked the 11th straight time Chattanooga advanced to a postseason tournament, eighth NCAA appearance under Moore's watchful eye, and the 11th season in a row with 20 or more wins.
Jenaya Wade-Fray became the 24th member of the 1,000-Point Club and propelled herself to 12th all-time with 1,351 points. She reached third both at Chattanooga and in the Southern Conference for 3-pointers made with 214, two shy of teammate Katasha Brown, and ranked 10th all-time at UTC for assists with 280.
Wade-Fray earned a spot on the SoCon' All-Conference squad and was named to the league's All-Tournament Second Team. During her career, she drew the assignment of guarding the other team's top player and was received the Best Defense award.
Chattanooga opened the season with back-to-back in-state contests. Chattanooga fell hard to former Southern Conference foe East Tennessee State but bounced back with a non-conference win over Austin Peay. A quick trip home saw a hard-fought loss to the Top 25-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs then a road loss to its second SEC foe of the season in Kentucky who also finished among the country's top teams.
In a rematch of the regular season finale, Chattanooga traveled to Birmingham to take on contender Samford in the league opener for both teams. However, the outcome this time would not be in Chattanooga's favor as the Bulldogs lit up the boards in front of the home crowd and easily dispatched the preseason favorite.
Three straight home wins, including a pair against SoCon foes Wofford and Furman followed by non-conference opponent Clemson, evened out the Chattanooga record at 5-5 through the second week of December and gave Chattanooga a 2-1 mark in league play.
Chattanooga began to put the steps together and the next game would produce a win that sparked a 13-game win streak, fifth longest in school history. The win streak included a double-overtime come-from-behind victory over Richmond followed by a win over host St. Peter's to claim the Holiday Classic title in Jersey City, N.J. The streak also included 11 wins over league opponents that propelled Chattanooga to the top of the Southern Conference standings.
The College of Charleston snapped the Lady Mocs win streak, but a pair of home wins over Appalachian State and Davidson secured at least a share of an 11th consecutive regular season conference title for Chattanooga and an 11th straight 20-win season.
Wade-Fray and Chattanooga closed out the year with a 24 - 9 overall record and went 16 - 4 in league play. It was just the second time ever that a team with four losses claimed the SoCon title. The last time was by Chattanooga in the 2001-02 season. Chattanooga led the SoCon in several categories including scoring, scoring margin and defensive rebounds and was second in free throw percentage, rebounding offense, rebounding defense, rebounding margin, assist-turnover ratio and 3-point field goals made.
