Dillas One Step away from US Open
Jarryd Dillas has advanced within one step of playing in next month U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
Charlie Blanchard a five-time R.I. Golf Association player-of-the-year posted six birdies on the way to a 2-under 68 Tuesday, to lead a 54-player field through local qualifying at Metacomet.
Blanchard advances to the sectionals next month at Canoe Brook in Summit, N.J., where he will be joined by former URI player Dillas and 2009 Vanderbilt grad Jon Curran of Hopkinton, Mass.
Dillas, a 2008 URI grad, finished second with a 69. Curran tied for third with Westerly's John Elliott, at 71. Curran won the playoff when he drained a 50-foot eagle putt on the par-5 second hole.
Dillas had three birdies and two bogeys on the way to his 69. Curran thought he had lost his chance when he bogeyed 15 and 17 to drop to 1-over. But that still tied him for third with Elliott and his eagle on the second playoff hole sent him on to the sectionals.
Bermuda Seniors Stroke Play Championship
Day 2 of the Bermuda Seniors Stroke Play Championship got underway at the Riddell’s Bay Golf & Country Club. With Tough and difficult pin placements meant that course management was a must. Hav Trott proved extremely steady today taking the good with the bad and ending with an 18 hole score of 75 to take the lead over Jeffrey Lindo who tried to catch up on hole 8 but put two balls in the Great Sound and recover with a triple bogey 7. The greens proved a bit much for defending champion Max Atherden as he carded an 82.
Kathy Lloyd Hines showed her knowledge of the course and carded a very steady 85 followed very closely by Betty Ann Sudbery who shot an 87.
