Overseas Bermuda cyclists Flora Duffy riding for the Colorado University and Geri Mewett who rides for Subaru-Gary Fisher Elite Road Team both came away with victories over the weekend.
Duffy, competing in the Front Range Cycling Classic, was beaten in the sprint finish of the criterium and finished second on Saturday in 40 degree weather, but she turned the tables on the next day in the road race with a strong effort that earned her a solo finish. The Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference finals is up next for Duffy and her teammates, followed by collegiate nationals which will be held in Wisconsin May 7th – 9th.
Meanwhile, Mewett took the line honors at the inaugural 112 kilometer Aaron Shafer Memorial Road Race in Sparta, TN.
With one kilometer to go a rider attacked for the victory but Mewett immediately gave chase, passing the lone escapee with 500 meters to go and he then powered across the line for the win.
