Shelly Pearson’s Harvard Varsity Four A teammates recorded the only win of the day for the 19th-ranked Harvard heavyweight crew in its first dual regatta of the season, as No. 5 Brown won four races on the Seekonk River under sunny skies and against a building headwind.
Harvard’s Varsity Four A outlasted Brown in a close race, finishing one second ahead in 7:56.1. Both crews got off to a great start, but Radcliffe led throughout. Brown closed in the third 500 meters but could not overcome the Black and White sprint.
In the varsity eight that saw Pearson take part in, there was overlap between the boats for the first 750 meters, but Brown (3-1) then pulled away and finished in 6:50.2 to Radcliffe’s 7:05.5. Brown also picked up wins in the second varsity eight, third varsity eight and varsity four B/C races, with Radcliffe’s entries posting times of 7:19.6, 7:52.3 and 8:42.4, respectively.
