WADA Names 7 Non Compliant Sports

IslandStats.com
The Bermuda Council for Drug-free Sport has dispatched the final list as at March 31 to the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation with the list of the 7 NSGB’s who are considered to be non compliant and therefore red-listed.

The NSGB’s are red-listed for a variety of reasons, such as, not providing membership lists for the random programme for more than 18 months; insufficient notice for pre event testing; non compliance by athletes for whereabouts information, not making the change to the constitution to include the adherence to the WADA and BCDS Rules and Procedures; and, in the extreme - not making any effort to achieve Compliance.

The NSGB’s are:
Archery; Boxing; Martial Arts; Motor Cross; Motor Cycle Racing; Target Shooting; and Tennis

The Bermuda Olympic Association and the Bermuda Council for Drug-free Sport have been invited to attend a series of individual meetings on Monday, April 5 in conjunction with the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation, where each sport will be informed of the consequence by the Department that will be meted out to them.

“Achieving Compliance is not a onetime effort, it must be maintained”, Jon Beard, Chair of the Bermuda Council for Drug-free Sport said, “The NSGB’s must adhere to regular provision of pre event notification; a calendar of events; ensure that their athletes attend education sessions on the illicit programme and provide at least an annual membership list for the Domestic Programmes. For National and International level athletes, athletes must ensure that they provide whereabouts on a quarterly basis in a timely manner; and NSGB’s must ensure that their high level Athlete Support personnel, such as Coaches or Managers attend the Coaches course; ensure that their Elite and National athlete list is kept up to date and ensure that their athletes understand and adhere to their responsibilities.

There are 8 NSGB’s who are “yellow listed” who have made significant improvement and have only a few loose ends to tidy up on in regards to maintaining Compliance,” explained Cathy Belvedere, Executive Director of BCDS. “These NSGB’s have to make the final effort and then maintain the requirements on a consistent basis. All the remaining NSGB’s must do the same or risk also being listed as non-compliant.” Mrs. Belvedere went on to add, “This is very serious as it can affect funding to both NSGB’s and their athletes; being locked out of Government owned premises; and, the International Federation will also be informed of the lack of consistency in Compliance which puts the NSGB at risk of being stripped of their classification as the National Sports Governing Body for their particular sport.”
