Erica Woods spent her school break in Bermuda with family and friends, www.islandstats.com caught up with Woods after she played a pick-up game with friends inside the Cedarbridge Gymnasium prior to the CellularOne Premier Basketball League (PBL) triple header.
We asked Woods about her first season at Marshall University.
Q. What was it like hearing your name announced as a starter for Marshall this season?
A. It was overwhelming, I was never really worried if I started or not, I just wanted to be ready whenever the team called upon me, however it was a good feeling because I had been working hard in training to get to that point.
Q. What goals did you set for yourself prior to the season?
A. I wanted to improve on my outside shot, I used to be able to hit from the outside but I grew a few inches which affected my rhythm so I had to work on that, I also wanted to improve my basketball IQ, the transformation from High School to College is a big difference, so I knew that was something I wanted to improve on and become a smarter player.
Q. At one point in the season, it seemed as if you carried Marshall on your back, what was that experience like?
A. It was one of those things, nothing was falling for my teammates, so I decided to try and make things happen, it kind of can natural because in Bermuda I was a leader my team.
Q. What was the hype like building up to the appearance on ESPN?
A. It has always been a dream of mine to play on Television, and when it was announced that we would be on TV it was exciting, leading up to it we believed we prepared ourselves the best we knew and we looked forward to showing what we had to offer.
Q. What goals have you set for yourself for the next season?
A. We want to try and win everything we play for, we have seven players returning and we are definitely looking to do a lot better next time around. Having said that we want to try and play more as a team, at times we would have three players doing the scoring and carrying the others, so we’re are going to be looking for everyone to make contributions all at the same time.
Q. You have three years remaining at school, how do you want to be remembered by Marshall when you are done?
A. Someone who is a hard working player, someone who is consistent.
