Fray & Heyliger Award Winners
Cricketer Terryn Fray and swimmer Rebecca Heyliger took home the Male and Female Sports Award at the Teen Services Outstanding Teens Awards ceremony held at a packed Hamilton Princess.

A total of 23 nominees in the category with a number of National Team Athletes in Soccer, Cricket, Track and Field, Sailing, Gymnastics, Triathlon, Field Hockey being represented.

Fray and Heyliger topped their Male and Female counterparts in a selection process that consists of a score based on their athletic achievements as well as interview questions which were conducted by the volunteering Sports Awards Committee.

Fray most recently captained the Bermuda National Cricket team at the America’s Cup. Heyliger, who hopes to attend Stanford University in the fall, has competed in the FINA Youth World Championships as well as the Youth Commonwealth Games.

At the Awards Ceremony it was announced Fray is an excellent cricketer, footballer, and middle-distance runner. However, it is at cricket that our winner has truly made his mark. He has represented Bermuda in international cricket events against leading countries such as England, Bangladesh, USA, Uganda, Canada and Argentina. In the America’s Cup of 2007 he achieved the 3rd highest average in the competition and scored the second highest individual score of 119 runs. In the 2009 competition his leadership skills were obvious and he was given the honour of captaining his country; a position he fulfilled superbly.

Domestically Fray continues to make his mark on the local cricket scene. At the Cup Match trial he scored a century, and in 2008 he had the 2nd highest score in the Premier and 1st Division, a knock of 146 runs. Our winner also shines on the football field. He plays for a Premier Division Club, captains his school team and has been selected as an All Star twice. As with cricket he always sets a terrific example in both attitude and effort.

It was then announced Heyliger is an outstanding all-round athlete, who has participated at school and inter-school levels in all areas of the P.E. curriculum, including swimming, netball, cross country, track and field, basketball, tennis and softball. She is a dedicated performer and holds herself and her team mates accountable for reaching their potential. As a past Games Captain of the school our winner is always eager to see other students perform well and represent the school to the highest possible standards.

Heyliger has won a host of athletic titles within school and at inter-school track and field meets both during her middle and high school years. She holds many records for the 800m and 1500m events. She has qualified for the Carifta Games, participated in the Front Street Mile, the 24th of May Heritage Junior Classic, the KPMG Series and she also is a three time winner of the Partner Re Women’s Charity Races. She has also participated in many triathlons at home and abroad, competing at both junior and senior levels. She is a three time Bermuda Triathlon Association age group champion and has also taken the title of ‘Most Improved Woman Triathlete.’

Although Heyliger is a formidable performer in cross country and track and field, her forte is swimming and it is at this that she really excels. She currently holds eleven short and long course local records. She has represented Bermuda at the Carifta Games for the past six years; at the Alberta Regional Championships for five years; the Canadian Age Group Nationals for two years; the Fina Youth Worlds and the Youth Commonwealth Games for one year. She holds the distinction of being a Bermuda Olympic Association Elite “C” Athlete and in 2007 received a government sponsorship award to train with a Canadian Olympic coach.
