The Bermuda Football Association General Secretary David Sabir announced the 2010 – 2011 Legends’ Academic Football Scholarships. Sabir said, “This year marks the 4th edition of the BFA’s scholarship program, which according to our Strategic Plan “Rebuilding the Competitiveness of Bermuda Football” highlights the importance of providing the opportunity for our players to further their academic studies through the sport of football. Our scholarship program also recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions to the game of football by our Legends”.
“Additionally, the Association believes that it is vitally important to keep our young football players focused on the benefits of combining their athletic and academic talents as they continue pursuing their life goals. Furthermore, the Association will continue to provide players with the best opportunity to develop through a wide ranging grassroots, school, club and national academy program enabling them to reach their optimal potential. The aim is to cultivate a larger number of more talented players who are eligible to obtain acceptance into overseas colleges and universities in addition to being eligible to obtain athletic and academic scholarships to institutions of higher learning. For this reason, we believe the continued offering of the BFA Legends Scholarships will encourage our student / football players in achieving these aims,” continued Sabir.
Sabir continued, “The key components of the Legends Scholarship Program for 2010-2011 academic years are as follows:
(1) The total value of all scholarships available for the 2 year period is $75,000; (2) The total number of individual scholarships is seven (7) ranging in amounts from $5,000 and $15,000; (3) Student / football players accepted to approved overseas preparatory schools, the Bermuda College as well as colleges and universities overseas are eligible to apply for the Legends scholarships; (4) Only those students / football players that are currently registered with the BFA will be eligible for consideration. (5) Applicants must prove that they have been accepted as a playing member on their school football team”.
Sabir then said, “It is my privilege to announce that this year’s Legends and the Scholarship Award in their honor:
Dr. Gerard Bean Scholarship for $15,000 Carlton “Pepe” Dill Scholarship for $15,000 Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Scholarship for $15,000 Joseph Ferreira Scholarship for $10,000 Kenny Cann Scholarship for $10,000 Charles Marshall Scholarship for $5,000 Earl “Townsey” Russell Scholarship for $5,000
Sabir went on to say, “The biographies of these Legends speak volumes of the discipline and respect, perseverance and hard work that were the hallmark of their time both on and off the playing field. Today, we thank these heroes in the sport of football and celebrate their contribution not only to football but Bermuda generally and for allowing the BFA to associate their names to these valuable Scholarships. We know each one of them believes in the value of a good education and therefore have endorsed the Legends Scholarship Program and the hope and opportunity it will bring to the future of Bermuda’s student / football players. Our Legends remind us that there are an abundance of high achievers associated with our football clubs in Bermuda and we must continue to encourage our young players to keep up the good work both on the football field and in the classroom”.
“The Legends Scholarship documents can be found on the BFA’s website at www.bermudafa.com or from our offices on 48 Cedar Avenue, Hamilton. Completed application forms must be returned to the BFA Secretariat no later than the deadline of April 16th before 5:00 p.m,” concluded Sabir.
