It took Australia 106 minutes & 50 seconds to score their first Try of the 2009 World Rugby Classic. Following their 0 – 0 draw with France, Australia got on the board with 3:10 remaining on the clock in the first half when Josh Gamgee went over for the Try and Matthew Pini kicked the Conversion for a 7 – 0 lead. Australia doubled the lead when Gamgee went over again, with Pini adding another Conversion for the lead to go to 14 – 0. Ed Brenac made it 19 – 0 to Australia when he scored with 26:00 remaining in the second half and then Matt Nethery got in on the scoring act when he converted a Try to make the score 24 – 0. Tim Maxwell scored a Try and Pini kicked the Conversion for the Australia lead to extend to 31 – 0, before one of three Bermuda players Steven Husbands playing for Australia assisted on Danny Flannery’s Try in the closing minutes to win 36 – 0.

Stephane Glas gave France the lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, with Sebastien Bozzi kicked the Conversion, Johhny Bell scored a Try in the close minutes of the first half for the World Rugby Classic defending Champions the Classic Lions and when Dave Scully kicked the Conversion the scores were level. The Classic Lions will defend their title in the final following Mark Blair’s Try midway through the second half and they held on for the win 12 – 7.
