Bermuda's 7’s Team Announced

IslandStats.com
The Bermuda team for the NAWIRA 7’s set to get underway in Mexico City November 14th & 15th.

For many years, Guyana, a country that has consistently produced the crop of the West Indies Sevens team, has dominated the men's tournament.

However, the gap has recently narrowed and the likes of Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda and Jamaica will be looking to overthrow their old foes.

In the women's event, Mexico and the Bahamas are expected to field an international women's rugby team for the first time, following in the footsteps of Cayman and Bermuda who both participated for the first time in 2008.

The Bermuda team is made up of three players from each team, Teachers have Kai Edwards, Andrew Hook and Jack Ellison representing them, Conor McGlynn, Darragh O’Donoghue and John Thompson will represent the Renegades, while David Rourke, Ryan Gonsalves and Gareth Williams will represent the Mariners and Nick Superin, Tom Edwards and Ralshon Douglas will represent the Police.

The tournament will be the first of its kind to be played in Mexico City and is just reward for the tireless work by the Mexican rugby federation, in its continued development of rugby in Mexico.

With Mexico hosting the 2011 PANAM Games, an event that will feature rugby sevens for the first time, the 2009 NAWIRA Sevens will provide the organizers with a good "trial run" and a tournament to wet the appetite of a public more used to playing and watching the round ball.

For the participating teams, playing at altitude will be a challenge and the fierce rivalry that exists between the countries of the Caribbean, should not fail to deliver a compelling tournament.
