The Bermuda Bicycle Association, in conjunction with Tokio Millennium Re and Bicycle Works will be hosting the first of seven mountain biking events for primary school children this Saturday, November 7th at 4:00PM in the Arboretum. The hour long program will include age group races as well as a skills area where budding mountain bikers can test themselves on a teeter-totter, ramp and a new “skinnies” section where the rider tries to ride on narrow, snaking boards. The program is free to all students and participants will be entered in a draw for a new bicycle from Bicycle Works.
With the support of company CEO Tatsuhiko Hoshina and executive Edwin Jordan, Tokio Millennium Re has been supporting this program since its inception four years ago. Each year over 100 children have participated in at least one of the events which started with four in 2006 and this season will see five events in the Arboretum and two at Ferry Reach Park. The latter two will be immediately preceding races part of the BBA’s mountain bike season series.
“Tokio Millennium Re’s support of this series has had a tremendous impact on the interest in mountain biking in Bermuda and cycling in general”, commented BBA president Peter Dunne. “By opening the sport to younger riders in a safe and controlled environment, families can see the enjoyment of their children in this sport and find out more about the BBA’s activities throughout the year. Both Tokio and Bicycle Works are to be commended for initiating and supporting this grass roots initiative.”
